Education Loan vs Personal Loan: Which Is Better for Your Studies?

A personal loan can look quicker and simpler, but for paying for a degree it is almost always the more expensive and stressful choice. Here's how the two compare on repayment, cost, tax and visa paperwork โ€” and the few cases where a personal loan does make sense.

Quick answer

  • Education loan: repay after your course, over up to about 15 years, usually at a lower rate โ€” plus a Section 80E tax deduction.
  • Personal loan: EMIs start almost immediately and the tenure is short, so it suits only small, quick-to-repay amounts.
  • For tuition and living costs abroad, an education loan is almost always the better choice.

Why the education loan usually wins

  • You don't pay while you study. The moratorium covers your course plus a grace period, so EMIs start once you're earning. With a personal loan, someone has to pay EMIs from day one.
  • Lower EMIs. A longer tenure spreads the same amount over many more months. Work out yours with our EMI calculator.
  • Tax savings. Interest on an education loan is deductible under Section 80E for up to eight years, with no upper limit, under the old tax regime.
  • Visa paperwork. Embassies accept an education loan sanction letter as proof that your studies are funded.

When a personal loan can make sense

  • A small amount you can repay within a year or two from a steady income.
  • A deposit or fee you must pay before your education loan is disbursed.
  • A short course that education lenders don't fund.

If collateral or a co-applicant is what's pushing you towards a personal loan, there are education loan options for both โ€” see education loans without collateral and education loans without a co-applicant. To compare education lenders, see our study abroad loan comparison.

Education Loan vs Personal Loan โ€” FAQs

Straight answers to the questions students ask us most

For most students, yes. An education loan lets you start repaying after your course, spreads repayment over many more years, usually costs less, qualifies for the Section 80E tax deduction on interest, and its sanction letter supports your visa application. A personal loan only makes sense for small, short-term gaps.
No. Section 80E covers interest on a loan taken from a bank, financial institution or approved charitable institution specifically for higher education. A personal loan doesn't qualify, even if you spend it on fees. The deduction is available only under the old tax regime.
When the amount is small and you can repay it quickly from a regular income โ€” for example, a short certificate course, a deposit you need to pay before your education loan is disbursed, or an expense your education loan doesn't cover.
